Repentance

In the New Testament, the word Repent in Greek is Metanoeo.  Translated, this means:  "To change one's mind, i.e. to repent to change one's mind for better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one's past sins."  Repentance is therefore not just a "change of mind". If it was, it would be simply mind over matter. A change of mind does not go far enough and is unlikely to bring about enduring change; it is change which is shallow. Instead, a change of mind coupled with a contrite heart of one's ways is what the scripture always conveys has to take place.  When Repentance involves a contrite heart (mind, will and emotions) it encompasses your very being and your spirit grows.  Such a change is extremely powerful. In the Hebrew, the word Repent carries the connotation and idea for us "to stop and to turn back and to get back on the right path".  The path that leads to GOD.

One of the most powerful illustrations of Repentance is the Prodigal Son.  In Luke 15:18, he says: "I will arise...", and this is followed in verse 20 which states that "he arose...". In other words, the prodigal son did not just confess with his mouth, but he actually did something.  Far too many people just confess but do not actually follow up with repentance. This young man, said he was going to Arise (this word means to come Alive) and he then picked himself up out of the pig pen. Then he journeyed back to his Father; he was getting back on the right path.  Repentance is far more than an Emotion, it is also an Action.

The Message Bible.  Romans 2:3-4 What Paul says about Repentance.

You didn't think, did you, that just by pointing your finger at others you would distract God from seeing all your misdoings and from coming down on you hard? Or did you think that because he's such a nice God, he'd let you off the hook? Better think this one through from the beginning. God is kind, but he's not soft. In kindness he takes us firmly by the hand and leads us into a radical life-change.

Amplified Bible. Romans 2:3-4

3And do you think or imagine, O man, when you judge and condemn those who practice such things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape God's judgment and elude His sentence and adverse verdict? 4Or are you [so blind as to] trifle with and presume upon and despise and underestimate the wealth of His kindness and forbearance and long-suffering patience? Are you unmindful or actually ignorant [of the fact] that God's kindness is intended to lead you to repent (to change your mind and inner man to accept God's will)?

NKJV. Acts 2:38 (Repentance and the gift of the Holy Spirit). What Peter says about Repentance.
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Amplified Bible  2 Cor 7:10 -- What Paul says about Repentace.

10For godly grief and the pain God is permitted to direct, produce a repentance that leads and contributes to salvation and deliverance from evil, and it never brings regret; but worldly grief (the hopeless sorrow that is characteristic of the pagan world) is deadly [breeding and ending in death].

Amplified Bible Luke 3:8 -- What John the Baptist says about Repentance.
Bear fruits that are deserving and consistent with [your] repentance [that is, conduct worthy of a heart changed, a heart abhorring sin]..."

Amplified Bible Matthew 4:17. What JESUS says about Repentance.
17From that time Jesus began to preach, crying out, Repent (change your mind for the better, heartily amend your ways, with abhorrence of your past sins), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
